Driving Sustainability in Food Supply Chains: A Global Leader’s Journey from India to the U.S.
New Delhi [India], August 4: The world of food and nutrition is experiencing a revolutionary change as food companies place greater emphasis on sustainability, traceability, and ethical sourcing. Leading the charge is a highly experienced procurement and sustainability expert who has been instrumental in redefining ingredient sourcing for a host of the world’s most prominent brands.
From overseeing dairy production in Gujarat to leading category management for Nordic Naturals Inc. in the US, Ritesh Gupta’s career shows how technical acumen and vision can leave a measurable impact across industries and continents.
At present, as Category Manager – Ingredients at Nordic Naturals Inc., USA, he is responsible for procuring vital ingredients like fish oil, vitamins, minerals, salts, and herbal extracts. His strategy combines sourcing frameworks with sustainability KPIs and traceability measures, so that each supplier is attuned to Nordic Naturals’ ESG objectives and quality standards. This has led to the establishment of strong supplier rating systems that reduce risks, enhance compliance, and promote long-term alliances globally. He is convinced that today’s consumers not only demand quality but also transparency, and his job makes sure that all ingredients used are up to both ethical and environmental standards.
Prior to Nordic Naturals, he worked at Nestlé India and the Nestlé R&D Centre for more than a decade, heading up sustainable sourcing initiatives for spices, dairy, and specialty ingredients. His efforts resulted in a 23% decrease in environmental footprint and a 30% increase in sustainable agriculture practices, benefiting more than 1,200 farmers and supply partners. He played a key role in establishing food safety measures across Nestlé’s supplier base and driving Nestlé’s sustainability leadership in the region, ensuring strong compliance and better quality standards across the supply chain.
With a solid technical background in Dairy and Food Technology from the College of Dairy and Food Science Technology, he furthered his studies with an MBA in Business Strategy and is also pursuing a PhD in Food Technology and Entrepreneurship at NIFTEM, India. Trained as a Lead Auditor for FSSC 22000 and ISO 14001, he brings to bear regulation compliance knowledge as well as strategic procurement experience that enables him to span intricate global supply chains while infusing sustainability as a fundamental driver of decision-making.
His work in sustainable sourcing has recognized him with several awards, such as Best Sustainable Initiative and Best Sustainable Project for Nestlé R&D Centre in 2023. Outside of corporate success, he is an industry thought leader and has spoken at major forums like CSIR-CFTRI Mysore’s Millet Week and the Government of Rajasthan’s Millet Conclave, where he spoke about the future of sustainable food ecosystems.
As the food and beverage industry adapts to climate change and increasing consumer demand, he sees the next generation of growth anchored in ethical sourcing and creative supply chain solutions. “The future of food is not just about nutrition; it’s about responsibility,” he states. “We have the chance to create open, sustainable supply chains that benefit people and the planet.
With almost two decades of experience working in multinational companies such as Nestlé, Perfetti Van Melle, and Nordic Naturals, he still advocates for sustainable ingredient sourcing and global supply chain transformation and raises the bar for the industry.
